What Makes a Window Passive House Compatible

A window qualifies for Passive House use when it meets three simultaneous requirements:

Whole-window U-value (Uw) of 0.80 W/m²K or below

This is the PHI threshold. For cold climate zones — Mountain West, Northeast, Quebec — PHIUS typically requires Uw ≤ 0.65 W/m²K or lower. All LuxHaus systems achieve whole-window U-values well within these targets, with our triple-pane assemblies reaching as low as U-0.15 (imperial) in the most demanding configurations.

Airtightness

Passive House certification requires whole-building airtightness of n50 ≤ 0.6 ACH. Windows are a primary infiltration point. LuxHaus tilt-turn systems use multi-gasket perimeter sealing and precision European hardware to achieve airtight performance that supports — not undermines — your blower door results.

Thermal bridge-free installation

The frame U-value (Uf) and the spacer thermal bridge coefficient (Ψg) must be accounted for in the PHPP energy model. LuxHaus provides the individual component values — Uf, Ug, Ψg — needed by your Passive House consultant to run accurate PHPP calculations. We work with PHI-certified consultants regularly.

Performance Across North American Climate Zones

PHIUS uses climate-specific performance targets, which means the right window for a project in Bozeman, Montana is not the same as the right window for Austin, Texas. LuxHaus systems cover the full range:

Cold & Subarctic (Zones 6–8)

Mountain West, Northern New England, Quebec, Ontario

Triple-pane with krypton or argon fill. Uw as low as 0.12–0.15 (imperial). Thermally broken frames with deep insulation profiles. Designed for −30°F conditions without interior condensation or comfort loss at the glass surface.

Mixed Humid (Zones 4–5)

Mid-Atlantic, Carolinas, Texas Hill Country, Pacific Northwest

Optimised solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) for winter passive gains without summer overheating. External shading compatibility. U-values that meet PHIUS mixed-climate targets.

Hot & Humid (Zones 1–3)

Florida, Gulf Coast, Southeast

Low SHGC glazing. Impact-rated configurations available (HVHZ). Humidity-resistant frame construction. Passive House in hot climates is about keeping heat out — our systems are configured for this.
